Brampton is a city in the Greater Toronto Area of Ontario, Canada. It is a suburban city with a population of 593,638 as of the 2016 census. Brampton is the ninth-largest city in Canada and the third-largest city in the Greater Toronto Area after Toronto and Mississauga.
Brampton was incorporated as a village in 1853, taking its name from the market town of Brampton, in Cumbria, England. The city was once known as "The Flower Town of Canada", a title it earned for its large greenhouse industry. Today, Brampton's major economic sectors include advanced manufacturing, retail administration and logistics, information and communication technologies, food and beverage, life sciences and business services.The city has a population density of 2,265 people per square kilometre (5,860/sq mi). Brampton's 2016 population represents a 7.8% increase from its 2011 population of 552,011, which in turn represented a 28.5% increase from 421,675 in 2006. This growth rate is significantly higher than the national and provincial averages for the same time periods. Brampton is one of Canada's fastest-growing municipalities with an average annual growth rate of 4.3% from 2001 to 2016. The city's population is projected to reach 777,000 by 2031. Brampton was once known as "The Flower Town of Canada", a title it earned forits large greenhouse industry.
